IN A plush Moroccan hotel, a couple celebrate their first wedding anniversary. He is a local boy made good, a successful eye doctor who's come to Tangiers for an ophthalmology conference. She, his coquettishly pretty colt of a wife, has her wits about her enough to notice that the hotel proprietor is ominously gawping as she takes a dip in the pool. Within hours she finds herself in exotic native garb and suspended by her arms under a spotlight alongside two other strung-up women, then gang-raped by some business-suited men and abandoned outside the hotel. Naturally her husband is very taken aback, especially to learn that the scene has been captured on video. To avenge himself and his spouse, he calls on his brother Kamel, the "no-good" black sheep of the family, who is a policeman. In getting his hands on the video, the good doctor shoots a cop - and he and his wife go on the run to avoid rough justice at the hands of the implicated and avenging police. "Here the only right you have is to keep your mouth shut," his brother warns him. Harboured first in a mud hut by a cherif with cheeks wrinkled like a crimped pastry, our heroes are stalked by an evil black-shirted cop across the parched Moroccan mountains.
Set against the desert valleys of "the home of the sun", "Mektoub" chronicles the hide-and-seek adventures of a couple on the lam. It's disappointing that the thing which seems most at stake is a husband's pride and distress in the wake of his wife's defilement - her reaction and his are given equal time - and it seems a disappointingly easy way out that what kickstarts their chase is a low-rent pretext for lingering on several abducted trussed-up women. "Mektoub"'s constituent elements - the nefarious police hot on the trail of the fugitive couple, the return of the prodigal, high-flying doctor to his lawless Morocco stomping grounds, the confrontation between estranged brothers - do not add up to a strong or enticing enough whole.
